Don sighed as his carpool bumped along the roads of Pleasantview. He was exhausted after a long day at work, he wanted to get home, watch TV and go to bed. Work, TV and sleep seemed to be the only things he did lately! He hadn't gone clubbing in longer than he could remember, and the thing he did best, well him and Nina had been struggling in their relationship lately, and THAT was definately off the list, well in Nina's opinion! He was in a dreamland until the car hit a familiar pothole. "Stop a second!" Don said looking through the grimy window. A familiar house stood glaring at him.
"What's wrong?" asked Amber, his moody driver.
"I'm getting off here today. Thanks for the lift" He leaped out of the car, feeling nervous. He had been planning this for a while now, it was perfect. Nina was at home with Max, sleeping probably, and wouldn't miss him, and he could tell Cassandra was home, the lights were on. He walked quickly up to the door and rang the old bell. It was time to meet his kids!
He watched through the glass in the door as a misty figure walked forward, and the door opened. A woman he barely recognised stood looking at him. She had cut her hair, got contacts and looked GREAT! He smiled.
"Hey Cassie!"
"What are you doing here Don? I haven't seen you in ages!" She looked fairly happy to see him, a good sign. "Come in, we can have a chat!"
As Don stepped into the old mansion, he noticed how different it looked.
"Woah! You've definately done it up nicely."
"Thanks. When the quads were born, I decided that kids probably wouldn't want to live in some gloomy old horror house! So I got Mary-Sue in to help me decorate it." Don noticed Cassandra sighed when she said Mary-Sue's name. He knew she had died a long time ago. He followed her into the living room, and noticed she was wearing her work uniform.
"Sorry, I didn't realise you'd just got home."
"Oh, it's fine!" She said, and sat down on a comfy sofa. He sat next to her. As he chatted to her about how she had been he noticed how different she was. She was a lot less shy, she made a lot more jokes and smiled a lot more.
Cassandra was glad to be on good terms with her kids Dad again, but if she had looked out of her window, she would have noticed that someone wasn't happy Mr Lothario was back in the house!
Don decided it was time to go for it. "So... can I meet the kids?" He noticed Cassandra looked slightly apprehensive when he said this. "I mean, I feel terrible I haven't been in their lives before this, and well, I want to know my own kids." He turned on his best smile. Cassandra was utterly charmed, she didn't realise how much she had missed Don.
"Of course! I'm sorry that you haven't met before today, their just doing their homework at the moment, come on into the dining room!"
Don was shocked. Four children sat quietly at the table discussing things he would never have cared about when he was a kid! They were currently chatting about whether baseball teams were no longer about sport, and more about money. "So...how old are you guys?" He said in a desperate attempt to break the ice.
"We just turned 8." A boy with glasses and a bad haircut said.
"Right...right" Don said and tried to remember their names. He knew the girl was called Bella. And there was definately a Robert, maybe a Michael...?
"Kids, remember how much you confuse people, tell Dad who's who." Cassandra smiled.
"Which one is Michael?" Don blurted, trying to look like he at least knew something.
The boy sitting nearest to him turned and said "There is no Michael, but I'm Martin." The other three exchanged sarcastic glances.
"Great. Just Great" Don thought. "My own kids are smarter than me AND they know it."
Cassandra seemed to know how Don felt and said "Right kids! Bedtime!"
As soon as the children had walked up the stairs solemnly, Cassandra turned to Don. "They're great aren't they?" She smiled proudly.
"Yeah, fantastic." Don sighed.
"Shall I do us something to eat? I'm not the best cook but you know..."
"Sure, I'm famished."
Then before he knew what was happening, Cassandra was suddenly kissing him. The two were too preoccupied to remember the lobster that was in the oven...
She ran to the hall, and grabbed the phone, calling the fire department. She told the, exactly what had happened, well leaving out the part that had happened in her room. They told her that they were on their way and to stay away from the blaze at all costs. She collapsed in a chair and watched as firefighters ran into her kitchen.
"The kitchen is pretty much destroyed. I think that if you can bear to leave the place, you should, the damage will cost too much to repair, even for your family. I would reccomend you start looking for houses as soon as you can."
"But my whole family is buried outside! My dad, my grandparents, I can't leave them!" Cassandra cried, tears welling in her eyes. Why had she been so stupid?!
"I'm sorry. But you'll have to work a lot from now on if you want to stay. This kitchen will cost at least 600,000 to repair, including repairing the fire damage. I'd say it would be cheaper to leave. Excuse me, but I have other emergencies."
Cassandra climbed the stairs again to try and get some sleep. Now she had thrown her family into turmoil. She didn't want to leave her father's grave! She had planned for herself and her children to be buried alongside him. And if she moved they would no doubt be dug up and put in a community grave. She couldn't let that happen! But 600,000 was more than even the Goth's had. She sighed and then saw Don asleep in her bed. He looked so handsome, but Cassandra regretted what had just happened. Now she had reopened a door with Don, a door which she hadn't wanted to ever see again a few hours ago. What was she going to do?
