Lilith was forced to
move her family to a different home. Her debts were piling up, so she sold the
big house they lived in, and they moved to a much smaller one. She had other
things to worry about, as well as moving though. Darleen had always been a weak
baby. She had had to stay in the hospital for a while after she was born, and
always seemed to have a cough. When she grew up to be a toddler, Lilith was
more hopeful, maybe it was just a phase, and Darleen definitely seemed to get
better. But one night, Lilith was worried about her, her breathing seemed off
and she was unable to stop coughing. She took her to the hospital, and the
staff rushed her away to theatre. The Pleasant family (what was left of them)
got some bad news that night.
“I can’t believe
she’s gone. I miss her so much!” cried David. Freya put her arms around him and
sighed.
“We all miss her
David, don’t worry she’s happy.” Lilith just cried next to the grave. She
didn’t say much for a few days after, and wore black all the time. David and
Freya were upset, but Freya had her best friend, Donna Langerak to help her and
David had Joseph Goth. Their friends meant a lot to them in this sad time, and
they helped them move on. One day Lilith came down the stairs smiling.
“I’m sorry I’ve not
been much help for a while guys.” She said and tears brimmed in her eyes again.
“She was almost the only piece of Dirk I had left and now she’s gone. Now I
just have you David.” Freya cleared her throat noisily. “No it’s not like
that!” Lilith said. “Freya I love you just as much as David, but Dirk wasn’t
your biological father, David I’m sorry, but having you is like having Dirk
around here again!” Freya nodded. It was true, David was just like Dirk in
appearance, and had the same bookish nature, but David was a lot more social
that Dirk, a trait he had inherited from Lilith.
“Thanks Angie. I’m
sorry too!” Then she burst into tears.
“Whoa! What’s wrong?”
“I’m sorry, I’ve just
been crying a lot at nothing recently.”
“C’mon, I can sort
that out. Go inside, I’ll make you a drink, and we’ll have a chat. I haven’t
seen Freya and David in ages!”
Through all the tough times the Pleasant family
had been through, they realized that they would be fine as long as they loved
each other. The moment they all realized this, a little ray of sunshine shone
through the leaves of the willow tree by the pond and landed on Darleen’s
grave, where it shone for a very long time.
